Shape Up BVHP Garden Project @ Bret Harte Elementary

(back to Shape Up SF Projects)

Shape Up Bayview Hunters Point was funded for a total of years by Kaiser Permanente (2007-2010) to address healthy eating and active living in the Bayview Hunters Point neighborhood. Specifically, Shape Up BVHP works with Bret Harte Elementary school students in both their school garden and at the DoubleRock garden. By planting and nurturing a garden, students are learning about nutrition and eating the healthy, nourishing food they grow in the garden.  Evaluations demonstrated that the students were more likely to try unknown fruits and vegetables as a result of growing and eating their own.

Additionally, Shape Up BVHP also supports Quesada Gardens Initiative to create a visibility garden in BVHP as a mechanism to create a more aesthetically pleasing environment that can help encourage people to be outside and active in their community.

On June 3, 2008, Shape Up BVHP was featured on KGO 7's program entitled, View from the Bay. A film crew shot footage at Bret Harte Elementary and DoubleRock Garden with a group of excited 3rd graders and their garden educator, Ms. Dana. Watch the video!

In Spring 2010,  Bret Harte Elementary secured funding for the next two school years – 2010/11 and 2011/12 – from San Francisco Environment, just as Kaiser funding was coming to an end. Quesada Gardens Initiative continues its community building gardening as well, you can see their work here http://www.quesadagardens.org/

Shape Up SF is thrilled that the seed that was planted with Bret Harte Elementary will continue to grow and flourish with funding from San Francisco Environment.
