USING A HUMAN RIGHTS FRAMEWORK
The Department on the Status of Women organizes its programs based on principles laid out in the U.N. Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW). San Francisco was the first city in the United States to adopt CEDAW as a local ordinance, and the Department is responsible for ensuring its implementation. The Department considers the rights laid out below as guiding principles for the policies and programs that have been prioritized in our work:
1. The Right to an Adequate Standard of Living - Employment and Economics programs, CEDAW programs
2. The Right to Bodily Integrity - Violence Against Women programs
3. The Right to Adequate Health Care - Health programs
4. The Right of Girls to Access to Education and Social Services - Girls programs
5. Implementation of CEDAW Ordinance - CEDAW programs
