MAYOR NEWSOM ANNOUNCES NEW GROCERY STORE
IN BAYVIEW-HUNTERS POINT
5800 Third Street is site of 360 condominiums and Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market
SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Today (Dec.13,2007), Mayor Gavin Newsom and Supervisor Sophie Maxwell joined Noteware Development, Goldman-Sachs Urban Investment Group and Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market in a landmark groundbreaking to initiate the construction of a mixed-use housing project that will include the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood's first full-service grocery store.
A recent survey of residents by the Southeast Food Access Task Force, Shape Up SF & a group of community and city organizations, showed that the majority of Bayview-Hunters Point residents must buy their food outside the neighborhood and view access to fresh and healthy food as an urgent issue for the neighborhood.
The 5800 Third Street project, sponsored by Noteware Development and Goldman-Sachs Urban Investment Group, with financing by both Citibank and Local Initiatives Support Corporation, is located adjacent to the Carroll Street station on the T-Third light rail line. The project includes 360 new condominium homes and 20,000 square feet of new retail, including the Fresh & Easy grocery store, and is expected to be completed in Fall 2009. Fresh & Easy Neighborhood Market is a local, neighborhood store committed to providing customers with fresh, wholesome food. Fresh & Easy is a company of Tesco, the UK's largest retailer and one of the world's leading international retailers.

World Diabetes Day Lights Up the San Francisco Skyline
On November 14th at 4:00 PM (PST), the Coit Tower, one of San Francisco's most celebrated landmarks, will light up in blue to mark the first United Nations World Diabetes Day. The Coit Tower joins over 100 of the world's most iconic buildings and sites, lighting up the skyline in the blue color of the diabetes circle, the symbol for the fight against diabetes. Today, 246 million people live with diabetes globally and if nothing is done, this figure will reach 380 million within 20 years. Approximately 52,000, or 6.5% of San Francisco children and adults suffer from diabetes.
Mayor Newsom's Challenge, Shape Up San Francisco, launched in April 2006, is working to create environments that are conducive to exercise and physical activity, and can therefore reduce the risk of diabetes.

SECOND ANNUAL Shape Up San Francisco Walking' begins
4 October 2007
San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom launched today the second annual Shape Up San Francisco Walking Challenge.
The grassroots campaign is designed to encourage neighborhoods, workplaces and youth groups to form teams and walk 1,016 miles in the next ten weeks, according to the mayor's office. That distance is equidistant to the length of the California coastline.
Over 40 teams have signed up for the challenge, according to the mayor's office. Each team will track their miles online and an interactive map will show the progress each team is making down the coastline.
Teams can also compare their progress to other teams involved in the challenge.
We live in a city ideal for walking, including our vast system of parks and our coastline,'' Newsom said.
The Walking Challenge is for everyone to take control of their health and start walking today.''
The first Walking Challenge included over 3,000 walkers from school programs, worksites, and recreation centers. Overall the walkers circled the globe more than three times, according to the mayor's office.
Shape Up San Francisco is an initiative that Newsom launched in May 2006 to address the public heath crisis of obesity, inactivity and poor nutrition in San Francisco.
Programs within the initiative include salad bars and healthy foods in public schools, a public awareness campaign on the effects of childhood obesity and poor eating habits, and Shape Up Tournaments with the Recreation and Parks district.
